Phosphorus removal from wastewater
Phosphorus can be removed by chemical and biological methods. Chemical phosphorus removal at wastewater treatment plants is a cheap and efficient method of first aid to protect the Baltic Sea. It is an established and effective wastewater purification method which has been in use for decades in countries such as Finland and Sweden. In Finland, iron sulphate produced as waste from the chemical industry is used as the chemical coagulant in the process. The method can be adapted for existing wastewater treatment plants without any significant additional construction.
