Selection of project targets
In May 2009, the Board of the John Nurminen Foundation launched a new operational model where phosphorous removal projects are implemented on the basis of applications from waterworks throughout the catchment of the Baltic Sea. The Foundation Board approves the applications case by case on the basis of project applications. The criteria include the reduced phosphorous tonnage, the cost-efficiency of the projects and a rapid implementation timetable.
When approving projects and project targets, the sufficiency of Foundation funds in relation to earlier commitments is always taken into account. We also always attempt to include public sector funding or funding from other private actors in our projects. Project targets are being actively identified in southwest Russia, Ukraine, the Baltic States and Poland.
Application procedure
Waterworks and cities can apply to be included as a target of the John Nurminen Foundation’s Clean Sea project and support for planned phosphorous removal investments with a freeform application.
The Clean Sea project aims to achieve a level of 0.5mg of phosphorus in a litre of purified wastewater in project targets, which corresponds to the recommendation by the Baltic Marine Environment Protection Commission (HELCOM).
Content of application
The application must include the following information:
- Current wastewater discharge, purification process currently used and phosphorous level (mg/l) in the wastewater coming to the waterworks and in wastewater purified there
- Planned investments to intensify phosphorous removal
- Estimated investment costs
- Waterworks’ own capital base for planned investments
- Estimated phosphorous level in purified wastewater after investments
- The amount of reduced phosphorous load due to investments, tonnes per year
Applications should be sent to:
