The Baltic States

Riga, Latvia

The cooperation agreement between the John Nurminen Foundation and Riga’s waterworks was signed in Helsinki on 25 September 2009. The aim of the agreement is to intensify the phosphorus removal in Riga’s wastewater treatment plant. The plant processes over one million habitants’ wastewater annually and, due to the project, the annual phosphorous load in the Baltic Sea has decreased by approximately 200 tonnes.

In addition to investment by the city of Riga, the John Nurminen Foundation is providing €100,000 to fund the intensification of phosphorous removal in Riga. Phosphorous removal projects in Riga are also funded by the PURE project.
